Pool Fence Requirements

Pool fence code is determined by the municipality, so your township, borough, or city decides what they require. Many municipalities adopt the pool fence section of the International Building Code unchanged, but it is sometimes modified.

Here are the basics of many local pool fence codes:

1. If the spacing between the vertical members is less than 1.5 inches, the fence needs to be 4 feet high or greater.  Examples: Any 4-foot high privacy fence, appropriately spaced vinyl and wood picket fences, post and rail fences with 1.5” x 4” welded wire, and two rail aluminum fences.
2. If the spacing between the vertical members is greater than 1.5 inches, the distance between the bottom rail and the next rail upward needs to be 45 inches or more. Examples: Specially designed 4.5-foot high aluminum fence styles Ascot and Canterbury and most aluminum, vinyl, and wood fences 5 feet high or greater.
3. Gates must be self-closing, open out, and have a latch.

Special Cases:

1. If the house is part of the pool enclosure, an alarm is required on all doors into the pool area. Alarms can also be required on ground-level windows that open into the pool area, and occasionally on second and third-floor windows that open into the pool area.
2. The gate latch must have a built-in key or combination lock.

Wood Pool Fencing
